The Queen of Swords Tarot Card

The Queen of Swords is one of the most visually striking and uplifting of the tarot cards in a traditional deck, especially when compared to some of the very dark and unsettling images seen elsewhere in the Suit if Swords. The card represents keen analysis, clairvoyance, and highly accurate intuition, and it can represent either a person or a state of mind. Its equivalent in playing-card tarotology is the Jack of Spades.

In the Rider-Waite version of the Queen of Swords tarot card, a woman is see in direct profile, facing to the right of the viewer. She sits on a throne adorned with cherubs' faces and butterflies, and her golden crown copies the butterflies of her royal seat. Flat clouds of both white and gray rise in the background, and her robe is blue with cloud-like shapes. A bird flies overhead, and she extends her left hand as if in greeting, while her right hand grasps a sword.
The bird, cherubs and butterflies in this card indicate the element of air, associated with clairvoyance, spirituality, and keen judgment. The clouds, representations of emotional and spiritual states of being, are flat and lacking texture, unlike most clouds in the Rider-Waite deck, and those closest to the horizon are dark: a suggestion of an underlying sadness or depression despite the general optimism of the card. The Queen of Swords is moody and emotional, but her powerful intellect and spiritual prowess keep her steady and clear-headed despite this issue.
When the Queen of Swords appears in a tarot reading, it is an indication that a person should seek the traits associated with the card: steadiness and power gained through precise judgment and cut-to-the-chase communication. The Queen of Swords demands that the subject of the tarot reading become (or remain) adept in judging people and circumstances through the lens of intuition and critical thinking.
However, like all Court Cards, the Queen of Swords may represent a person, rather than simply a state of mind or a state of being. When this is the case, the tarot card almost universally represents a woman or feminine figure, who is mature either in years or in her intellectual development. She is likely a Libra or shares similar traits, and is known for being both sharp-witted and potentially judgmental. Though she appears confident to most people, she carries a permanent state of sadness that underlies her daily life. Because of this, she may come across as cynical and cold.
