Reading the Queen of Cups Tarot Card

The Queen of Cups, one of the Court Cards of the Minor Arcana in a traditional tarot deck, is full of meaning, complex symbolism, and profound spiritual imagery. Arguably one of the most spiritually uplifting cards of the entire tarot deck, the Queen of Cups is considered to be a symbol of pure love, vitrue and loyalty.

In the Rider-Waite deck, the most popular tarot deck in the English-speaking world, the Queen of Cups is depicted as a fair-skinned, curvy woman in flowing light-blue robes. She sits on a throne adorned with mermaids and fish, and is surrounded by a vast blue ocean. Colorful seashells sit at her feet, and she holds an elaborate golden chalice in her hand, with handles formed in the shape of angels.
Many of the symbols and images in the Queen of Cups card have been likened to the archetype of the Divine Feminine. Imagery associated with the ocean, including the water, mermaids, fish, and seashells in the tarot card, have long been associated with Goddess worship and the sacred feminine, as are the traditional tarot symbolism of Queens and the Suit of Cups. The character portrayed in this tarot card is also dressed in pale blue, a color often linked to the Virgin Mary.
Taken altogether, the images in the Queen of Cups ultimately point to purity, motherhood, and a state of unconditional love and affection. Depending on her context in a tarot reading, the Queen of Cups can indicate a state of spiritual nirvana and bliss, reached through unconditional and maternal love. The tarot card has also been associated with fertility, pregnancy, and fulfillment in a relationship.
Like all other Court Cards in tarot, the Queen of Cups might represent a person rather than just a state of being. When the context of the card within a tarot spread indicates an individual, rather than a philosophy, it almost unanimously symbolizes a female. She is over thirty-five or an "old soul", and most likely a mother. The woman portrayed as the Queen of Wands is sensitive, very affectionate, and extremely loving toward the weak and the helpless. She is spiritually very powerful, but may tend toward insecurity and withdrawal.
When reversed, the Queen of Cups acts as a warning of someone who appears to display the traits associated with the card, but is actually using this as a veil for manipulative activity. Whether it represents the subject of the tarot reading or a person in his or her life, it is a red flag of caution. Someone who seems to be loving and sensitive is actually stabbing others in the back.
